Sep 01, 2019· Way back when, not really knowing what I was doing where a little knowledge is a dangerous thing, I replace a plate-voltage selenium rectifier that had failed with a silicon rectifier in an old tube TV, without any other changes. The TV then worked but had a bright edge along one side of the CRT display which was the edge of the scan.
Dec 30, 2012· Help; Hello Guest, Please feel free to join us! ... a Zenith Model Y723 that needs a new rectifier or preferably, a diode replacement. I looked on ebay for a NOS selenium rectifier to no avail. Zenith has several listed in their parts list such as a Federal 1101A or a Tarzian 100A but I couldn't' find these. The current rating is .071A.

But the 100k resistor is a little insurance to help save your Power Transformer in case of a catastrophic failure in the amp. Re: Strange selenium rectifier had meter set on auto ac or dc setting both rectifiers read no voltage,I know i read the right leads and i even played roulette with the leads still no voltage but with installing the new long( brunswick rectifier I got 90 volts going to clutch now)could it be someone somehow in past wired things wrong according to book but it still works?

It's part of the heater supply as you mentioned.
Dec 03, 2008· Selenium rectifiers were made by stacked plates of aluminum or steel, one face covered by a thin layer of selenium and by a soft-metal counterelectrode. They could be damaged by excessive humidity or by corrosive atmosphere: however, in this case, the entire set should show severe trace of rust and corrosion.
Abstract: Selenium rectifiers are dry-plate rectifiers of the electronic type. The history of dry rectifiers hegan some 30 years ago with the advent of the copper-sulphide rectifier. In the early 20' s, the copper-oxide type came into common use, and during the past three years, selenium rectifiers have found wide application in American industry.
A selenium rectifier is a type of metal rectifier, invented in 1933. They were used in power supplies for electronic equipment and in high-current battery-charger applications until they were superseded by silicon diode rectifiers in the late 1960s.The arrival of the alternator in some automobiles was the result of compact, low-cost, high-current silicon rectifiers.
Preventative Maintenance - Brunswick Selenium Rectifier "A's" 10-08-2017, 09:48 AM With the help of James and exMech, I converted my old Jet Back rectifiers to a Silicon Bridge Rectifier.
Jun 19, 2007· For a time during the 1950s a lot of television sets were made which used selenium rectifiers. Even Collins Radio used a selenium rectifier in the S-Line power supply (516F-2) for the bias voltage rectifier (half-wave). Ameco used a selenium rectifier (half-wave) in the power supply for all of their tube-type VHF converters.
Selenium is a chemical element with the symbol Se and atomic number 34. It is a nonmetal (more rarely considered a metalloid) with properties that are intermediate between the elements above and below in the periodic table, sulfur and tellurium, and also has similarities to arsenic. It rarely occurs in its elemental state or as pure ore compounds in the Earth's crust.

Nasty things, get rid of them. From Wikipedia - "Selenium rectifiers had a shorter lifespan than desired. During catastrophic failure they produced significant quantities of malodorous and highly toxic fumes that let the repair technician know what the problem was.

I have two Knight Star Roamer Radios with selenium rectifiers and I fixed one so far but the other one has a problem, if I change the selenium rectifier to a diode the dc reads negative but read postive with the selenium rectifier but to low a voltage. Who wants to help? Lincoln here!
This device probably used a selenium rectifier because silicon rectifiers did not exist at the time it was constructed, or were not large enough to use in this application. If a similar device were to be built today, it would use a silicon diode -- there is no advantage to the use of a selenium rectifier. Selenium …
Remember that selenium rectifiers have a much greater forward voltage drop with current than do silicon diodes. Thus when you replace a selenium diode with a silicon diode, expect a higher voltage out of your circuit. For most selenium stacks, the DC output is about 2 volts less than the RMS input voltage multiplied by the number of plates.
Selenium rectifier stacks are made up of selenium cells, which are mounted together and circuited as required for each application. They are available in configurations to suit all of the rectifier circuits. ... A voltmeter will help here! Your original bridge is working, just weak, so you should be able to identify the AC and DC points. If you look for images of selenium rectifiers online you may find one that matches your layout enough to give you a better idea of the tie points. You don't usually need a heatsink for solenoid bridges as they
Very old welders and chargers used selenium rectifiers which have been obsolete for 30 years. Solid state conversions are available at OVC. We custom build heat sinks and use conventional modules or individual power diodes and build as a half wave, full wave or bridge rectifiers. Just because its flagged obsolete doesn't mean its non repairable.
Jun 12, 2012· Selenium is another one of those elements/compounds that are essential for life, but can kill you in too large of a quantity (like water). Don-----dant posted: << I am restoring an older tube short wave radio that contains a selenium rectifier for the high voltage power supply. Jul 16, 2010· With a probe you'll just take a reading looking for current, wattage & plate voltage. If it needs adjusting you'll simply adjust the bias range resistor's value, which is the resistor ahead of the selenium rectifier (or diode if it has been updated, as is often the case with tweeds), or the 56k bias resistor after the rectifier or diode.
It's not impossible a "NOS" selenium rectifier would have failed the same way as the one already in the unit. Like paper and electrolytic capacitors, a selenium rectifier could deteriorate due to age alone. If you have a digital meter, there should be a function to check the diode.
Oct 22, 2010· Subject: Re: Help, please, with a selenium rectifier replacement question Fri Oct 22, 2010 12:29 am: From time to time a selenium rectifier will break down and spew toxic selenium. Thus, not only will the circuit fail - you will have a toxic chemical cleanup task. Replace the rectifier. A 1-amp, 800 - 1000 PIV diode will work fine.

Nov 21, 2007· rectifiers used to give you the voltage (B, in this case 250 volts) and current rating (C, in this case 50mA) of the device. I agree with the other posters that you can replace the selenium with a silicon diode, but may need to ad a dropping resistor as the B+ may be higher because of less loss in the rectifier. I usually bring the item
Life and failures of selenium rectifiers . Too often, when powering an old radio or an electronic set that uses selenium rectifiers in its power supply section, these components fail. Symptoms are a quite fast overheating of the rectifiers themselves, a considerable reduction of the AC and
